This photograph of Kanichi Shiosaki comes from The National Archive of Australia in Brisbane. It was taken in 1931 for his application for exemption to the dictation test, a function of the White Australia Policy. The application would allow Kanichi, aged 22, to travel to Japan and return to Australia without being barred entry due to his perceived race. He was born on Thursday Island, QLD.
